Slim Aarons Prints

Slim Aarons Prints

Slim Aarons (1916-2006) was a photographer notable for his intimate depiction of celebrities and socialites.

His daughter recalled stories of her father as a boy in New York City, waiting outside the stage doors on Broadway to photograph actors and actresses, Aarons would then send the pictures to the stars to be autographed and sent back.

During the second world war, Slim Aarons was an army photographer and won a Purple Heart, he said afterwards that the war taught him that the "only beach worth landing on was decorated with beautiful, seminude girls tanning in a tranquil sun".

When the war ended, Slim Aarons moved to California and began documenting the previously unseen world of celebrities in publications like Harper's Bazaar and Life. This adhered to his vision of "Attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places".

The most recognisable of Slim Aarons' prints is 'Kings of Hollywood', a photograph taken on New Year's eve 1957 of tuxedo-clad movie stars Clark Gable, Van Heflin, Gary Cooper and James Stewart.
