Tapeworm in cats

Tapeworms in Cats - Signs and Treatment

What are tapeworms?

Also known as 'Cestodes ', tapeworms are flat, segmented worms which live in the small intestine of cats (and other mammals).

Tapeworms are hermaphroditic, which means they contain both ovaries and testes and are capable of reproducing on their own. They have a head (scolex), a neck and a segmented body (the segments are known as proglottids and collectively strobila ). The head attaches to the wall of the small intestine with hook like mouthparts, once attched it begins to produce proglottids. Each proglottid has its own digestive tract, male and female reproductive organs.

Tapeworms are whitish/cream in colour with a ribbon like appearance, and can grow up to 24 inches (60 cm) in length. They are the second most common type of worm to infect cats (roundworms are the most common).

Life cycle of the tapeworm and how cats become infected with tapeworms:

The tapeworm needs two 'hosts' to complete their life cycle. First is the intermediate host (the flea or rodent), which passes the larval stage of the tapeworm around, and the final host (your cat), where the larvae develops into an adult tapeworm. Once the tapeworm reaches maturity (in around 2 - 3 weeks), proglottids, (which now contain up to 20 eggs), break off and leave the body via the feces or crawl out of the anus. Proglottids have the appearance of rice grains and are motile (capable of movement). Once outside the body, the proglottids dry out, releasing the eggs (which have the appearance of sesame seeds). Eggs are then eaten by flea larvae or accidentally ingested by a rodent and so the cycle begins once again.

  • Dipylidium caninum. The most common tapeworm found in cats. The cat flea is the intermediate host of dipylidium caninum. Proglottids are passed in the feces or crawl out of the anus and are eaten by flea larvae. Once inside the flea larvae, the egg hatches and becomes cysticercoid (containing an immature scolex). The flea larvae develops into an adult flea, which goes about its business of parasitising your pet and sucking blood. Your cat then ingests the flea during grooming. Once inside the stomach, the flea is broken down and the cystercoid is released. It hooks onto the lining of the small intestinal wall and develops into an adult tapeworm. For each cystercoid ingested, one tapeworm will develop.
  • Taenia taeniaeformis. The second most common tapeworm in cats. Cats become infected with taenia taeniaeformis via eating rodents containing the larval tapeworm. Rodents become infected by eating plant material contaminated with cat feces containing embryonated tapeworm eggs. Once in the small intestine of the rodent, oncospheres (tapeworm embryos) make their way to the rodent's liver where they develop into the strobilocerus stage (a fluid filled cyst containing a scolex, segmented body (strobila) and a terminal bladder). If a cat consumes the liver of a rodent containing a strobilocerus, infection occurs. Once ingested outer portion containing the strobila and bladder are digested away, leaving the scolex, which attaches to the wall of the small intestinal wall and develops into an adult tapeworm. Once again, when the tapeworm reaches maturity, proglottids exit the cat via the feces or anus, dry out and release their eggs which are consumed by a rodent. For each strobilocerus ingested by the cat, one tapeworm will develop.

Distribution of both didylidium caninum and taenia taeniaeformis is worldwide.

What are the symptoms of tapeworms in cats?

Generally there will be few outward symptoms of a tapeworm infection. Most cat owners discover their cat has tapeworm when they notice rice like segments (proglottids) around the cat's anus, in his feces and in the environment (such as bedding).

It is also possible in some cases for the tapeworm to release its attachment on the small intestinal wall and move to the stomach, the cat may then vomit up the tapeworm.

Some cats may bite or lick at their anal area or scoot their hindquarters along the floor.

The fur may also take on a poor appearance.

A heavy infestation may cause your cat to lose weight due to the tapeworm competing for nutrients with the cat.

How are tapeworms diagnosed in cats?

Your veterinarian will perform a physical examination of your cat and may notice tapeworm segments around the anus or in the feces

Diagnosis can be confirmed by performing a study of a fresh sample of feces to check for the presence of proglottids.

Are tapeworms dangerous to cats?

Generally no, tapeworms aren't harmful to cats. However, as tapeworms take nutrients from the cat a heavy infestation can cause your cat to become nutritionally deprived and lose weight.

What's the treatment for tapeworms in cats?

Your veterinarian will be able to provide you with a effective deworming medication which will kill the tapeworm(s). These may be in tablet, injection or spot on form. Once they have died, they will be digested along with the cat's food.

Common tapeworm medications include:

Propantel (tablet).

Virbac (tablet).

Profender (spot on).

Your cat and the environment will need to be treated for fleas at the same time. All bedding should be washed in hot water. All pets in the household should be treated for both tapeworm and fleas.

Can I catch tapeworms from my cat?

Yes and no. You cannot catch tapeworm directly from your cat, but if your cat has fleas, it is possible to catch tapeworm by accidentally swallowing a flea carrying the tapeworm cysticercoid. Humans are most likely to become infected with tapeworms from eating undercooked meat.

Pinworms are the most common parasitic worm to infect humans. Transmission occurs from human/human and via objects such as bedding, cats do not spread these worms.

How do I prevent tapeworm in my pet?

Stringent flea control is essential in preventing tapeworm in cats. If you treat your cat for tapeworm but don't address the problem of fleas, your cat will become re-infected with tapeworm quickly. Remember that most of the flea life cycle is spent in the environment and not on the cat, therefore you need to treat the house and outdoors for fleas at the same time as you treat your cat.

Preventing hunting in cats by keeping them indoors.

Resmed s9 autoset

S9 AutoSet™ CPAP Machine

The S9 AutoSet is the premium Automatic Positive Airway Pressure (APAP) model in ResMed's S9 Series. ResMed had incorporated Easy-Breathe Technology along with an Enhanced AutoSet algorithm to make breathing through a CPAP feel more "natural". Major improvements can be seen throughout the system with advanced features like the Optional H5i with Climate Control, ClimateLine heated tubing, and on-display advanced data reporting.

Product Features

The AutoSet series of Automatic Positive Airway Pressure (APAP) machines have long been designed to maximize comfort while providing minimal therapy pressures at the optimal moment. ResMed builds upon the AutoSet Advantage algorithm and incorporates EPR with Easy-Breathe technology in a new post modern shell. The S9 Series aesthetics are a complete redesign with new features:

    Key Product Features
  • Intuitive Design
  • Mask-Fit System
  • Optional Climate Control Heated Humidifier
  • SlimLine or (Optional) ClimateLine Tubing
  • AutoSet with Easy-Breathe Technology
  • Forced Oscillation Technique (FOT)
  • Expiratory Pressure Relief (EPR)
  • Smart Start / Smart Stop
  • On-Display Advanced Data Reporting
  • Optional SkinIt Cover
  • Mask-Fit System

ResMed has incorporated a simple and effective tool for help with proper mask fitting. The Mask-Fit system allows users to preset a mask type, tailoring the S9 CPAP therapy to a particular mask style:

    • Nasal
    • Pillows
    • Full Face

Once set, the Mask-Fit system runs a 3 minute seal integrity test, prior to therapy treatment. After 3 minutes, a Mask-Fit icon appears (a green or red smiley face). If the smiley face is red, adjustments are necessary until the smiley face turns green, then therapy will begin.

Optional Humidaire H5i Heated Humidifier with Climate Control

ResMed has re-invented the Humidaire line of CPAP humidifiers. The Humidaire H5i incorporates an intelligent humidity controlling technology. The Climate Control system is managed through a combination of S9 machines, H5i humidifier and ClimateLine heated tubing. There are five sensors throughout the system that monitor ambient temperature and patient airflow. The ClimateLine heated tubing uses a built-in mask temperature sensor to reach relative humidity at the mask. Sensors inside and outside the CPAP machine closely monitor changes in humidity and prevents condensation from forming inside the tube. Rainout can hinder CPAP therapy and affect compliance. With the H5i humidifier, set the level of humidity and attach the ClimateLine tubing to achieve a new level of comfort.

    SlimLine and (Optional) ClimateLine Tubing

The S9 Series CPAP machines come standard with the new ResMed SlimLine Tubing. The small diameter air tube is ultra-light, flexible and provides a unique alternative to bulky, generic 6 foot hoses. ResMed also offers a Standard Hose.

The ClimateLine Tubing has an internal heated coil and mask temperature sensor that helps manage rainout throughout the hose. Climate Control algorithms measure temperatures from the humidifier to prevent condensation from forming. The ClimateLine Tubing can use the SlimLine Tubing Wrap to achieve total control of rainout.

    Enhanced AutoSet Advantage

ResMed's AutoSet Advantage is the answer to providing 'just what you need, when you need it'. Pressure needs vary throughout the night. These variations depend on how deep the user is sleeping, body position, and other daily factors that can affect therapy levels. AutoSet Advantage effectively minimizes therapy and helps lower pressure-related side effects, like mouth-breathing and nasal dryness. The AutoSet Advantage has always provided a strong defense against a main types of sleeping events:

  • Flow Limitations
  • Snoring
  • Obstructive Apneas

The Enhanced AutoSet Advantage now detects and responds to open events using an event responsive Forced Oscillation Technique (FOT). A different event response is generated when an open airway event is encountered.

    AutoSet Algorithm

The AutoSet algorithm measures flow limitations such as snoring and apneas on a breath-by-breath basis. Therapy begins at a minimal pressure. When the user's airflow shows signs of flow limitation, the AutoSet algorithm gently increases pressure based on the intensity and duration of the event. Once the event clears, pressures gradually decrease over a 20 minute time frame. Flow limitation occurs as the upper airway begins to collapse, before snoring and apneas are detected. By gradually increasing therapy pressure, the AutoSet algorithm reacts preemptively, resulting in lower average treatment pressures.

For example, as you sleep on your side, pressures will stay at a minimum because your airway is open. Turning on your back can collapse the airway and the AutoSet algorithm will increase the pressure. The AutoSet algorithm recognizes other conditions like sinus colds or allergies, which restrict nasal airflow. The AutoSet Advantage will increase treatment pressure accordingly, for whatever flow limitation may occur.

    AutoSet with Easy-Breathe Technology

The S9 AutoSet uses Easy-Breathe Technology along with expiratory pressure relief (EPR) to make breathing through an APAP feel natural. At the onset of a flow limitation, the AutoSet algorithm responds with an increase of therapy pressure based on the degree of airflow restriction. Easy-Breathe technology aids in smoothing the pressure waveform during pressure increase. The process imitates normal respiration and ultimately makes breathing more comfortable than traditional CPAP machines. Easy-Breathe allows the user to receive the lowest pressure necessary to keep the airway open.

As an added benefit, Easy-Breathe allows the S9 Series to operate at 26 dBA when set to 10cm of pressure from a distance of one meter. ResMed also managed to reduce the overall conducted noise that typically travels from the machine, through the tubing, and at the mask.

    Expiratory Pressure Relief (EPR)

EPR decreases the pressure at the beginning of each breath and keeps the pressure low throughout the exhalation. The pressure is reduced by an exact pressure drop of one, two or three centimeters of water pressure. EPR gradually changes therapy pressures so there is little ventilatory effect. EPR also has an Event Detection Circuit. When a sleep disordered breathing event is expected or has occurred, EPR stops until the event concludes and normal breathing resumes.

For more information on all these technologies, check out ResMed's Tech Fact Sheet.

    SmartStart / SmartStop

SmartStart / SmartStop enables your device to start automatically by breathing into the mask. This feature automatically starts and stops your CPAP machine when you put on or take off your mask.

    On-Display Advanced Data

There are two menus that provide users with information about compliance, therapy and machine settings: Standard Menu and Clinical Menu. Both can be reached by using the "Info" button on your machine, but the Advanced Info Menu will only appear if the machine is in its Clinical Mode.

looks cool already…,but i have a question? is that a christmas tree i spy?

    says

Oh my gosh seriously! I',m DYING! I can',t wait to see it! This might just be the inspiration I needed for my accent wall in my bedroom. I',m kinda over the whole stenciling one wall thing and these bricks would look LOVELY! I',m checkin back

OMGoodness…,can',t WAIT to see how it turns out. Eeek!

SO Cool! Always inspired when I come here.

I LOVE brick! I want faux brick in my plain, uninspired kitchen. I don',t know if Campaign Convince My Husband has even a ghost of a chance though.

I could just kiss you. I have wanted a brick wall forever and if it',s something inexpensive easy to install –, better still!!

I will so be around for your next post. New follower here!

I am on the edge of my seat waiting to see how you transformed that brick…, darn! How unfair, lol. My parent',s kitchen has had that brick look paneling up for years…, I can',t remember it without it for the past 30 ish years. I would so love to see how you manage to perk it up because I',d love to do something with the brick at their house! I',ve so wanted to rip those stinkers down for so long so please please please don',t make me wait too long to see how you pretty it up!

I am SO excited to see how this one turns out! What a terrific idea.

Can',t wait to see the finished product, I am new to your blog and new to blogging, Icheck your blog everyday, love all of your ideas. My hubby is handy but not willing, I keep showing him all the stuff your hubby does and am hoping the guilt will work. lol

Been lurking a while, but now you',ve got my attention! Can',t wait to see the finished project. And that hiccup you made would have been the same one we would have made too. It just happens like that sometimes!

I can',t wait! Your vision blows me away!

NO. Wait. I don',t think I can! I simply can not wait to see it! I know it will look amazing just like everything else you do

    says

I second that…,I have to try this too!

    Ack! Cliffhanger. So mean!

I too am a Pinterest fanatic. I am in love with old brick and found the same panels a few months ago at Lowe',s. It took about a month of convincing, but my trophy hubby finally got on board and we now have faux brick in our Master bedroom. We haven',t had time to distress ours yet, so I am looking forward to seeing what you do.

Oh no, I cannot wait! Looking forward to the finished project!!

Love your inspiro photos and already saw part two to this too. Like how you went out on a limb with this. I might (MIGHT) get brave enough to try this on a small swatch. Do you think maybe gesso or even modeling paste would give it even mor eof the thick texture in your first and last inspiro photos?

    very nice coat - 12/29/2014

    By: pbbbbb from Richmond, VA

bought this coat for my daughter. Super nice to say the least. She was thrilled with it. It arrived in a speedy manner and though she didn't like the color, the local Orvis was happy to exchange it for the color she wanted. I do think that it runs a little small, so if you can try one on before purchase, that might be a good plan, but not a big deal if not as Orvis is easy to work with when exchanging.

Bad in so many way - 12/18/2014

    By: klescop from Connecticut

This is no 1 star rating because the hood is the wrong color and I'm incapable of understanding color before I purchase an item. The hood is terrible. To summarize: 1.) obnoxious label 2.) too small 3.) useless wire 4.) loose snaps 5.) sloppy design 1.) Barbour has put a label that faces outwards and right side up when the hood is down. This is an example of conspicuous consumption. It's meant to show off the brand, which is an expensive one, and let everyone around you know that you buy expensive stuff. That is just awful. I cut mine out. 2.) The hood fails spectacularly in protecting my head against rain. In fact, I am reasonably certain that more water falls onto my face when the hood is up through the "under a ledge" effect. Have you ever walked under an awning and jumped through the curtain of rainfall that gathers at the edge? The hood creates a curtain of rainfall onto your face. Terrible. That is of course, when the hood stays up. It's too light to withstand wind of any sort and will casually flop over and completely give up if you create strong gusts by walking in a forwards direction. 3.) What purpose does the wire serve except digging into my back when I'm driving, or making the process of lifting up my useless hood just a touch more annoying by forcing me to restructure the thing every time I want rainfall to be gathered and poured onto my face? 4.) God forbid you treat your jacket like a jacket and lift it up by it's hood. All you will have in your hand is a hood. A useless hood. The rest of the jacket will be on the floor because the snaps are completely incapable of performing their sole function. Do you sometimes like to roll your shoulders when putting on a jacket to get it to sit well? Well you now get to add the fun step of snapping one or two loose catches from the hood back on every time you do that. 5.) The tags, which conveniently are translated into 18 different languages will invariably flap across your face either blocking one nostril or tickling your cheek until you cut them out. The ends that contain the drawstrings will invariably sit at asymmetrical and absurd angles whenever the hood is down unless you adjust them to look alright. Conclusion: The hood is an affront to human decency.

    Great jacket - 12/6/2014

I bought this jacket for my husband and he really loved it. It's a multi use, just great and beautiful jacket! It can been worn either as an elegant as well as a casual jacket!!

This is the second Barbour jacket I have purchased. Also bought the wax to refurbish the old jacket. My son wears this all the time, bought the vest and hood also. Can't say enough about Barbour quality it is by far the best jacket made!

    Excellent. - 11/12/2014

    By: JohnH98 from Alexandria, BAA

This is my third Barbour coat. I reached for this model because it is shorter and was made with the Thornproof fabric which hopefully will wear better than the lighter fabric. It met my expectations. Knitted cuffs are new for me. I do feel that the fabric is not as heavy as my first Barbour from 20 years ago and would love not to have 'Barbour' stitched on the pocket.

    awesome buy - 10/31/2014

    By: brownleewhite

The jacket is killer. Navy is the way to go. Attention grabber but still a classic! Strong look and this jacket will last forever with if maintained properly. I recommend the Bedale if you want a shorter jacket. I'm 5'5" so the Bedale is a perfect option.

The Complete Mikimoto Pearl Jewelry Guide

The Complete Mikimoto Pearl Jewelry Guide

Complete Guide to buying Mikimoto Pearls.

Why pay more for Mikimoto pearls? What are the qualities to look for in pearls? What distinguishes Mikimoto akoya salt-water pearls from others? Finally, Myths and legends, caring for your pearls, and the common Mikimoto brand names in exported and domestic brand Mikimoto pearls.

    Akoya pearls

",Akoya", is the generic Japanese terminology for a akoya oyster saltwater pearl found only in Japan and is not synonymous with Mikimoto. It wasn’t until Mikimoto America clamped down on the sellers from China using the Mikimoto name on non- branded pearls late in 2006. Fortunately, the flood of such auctions has ended, but the occasional seller persists.

    Mikimoto quality?

Although it is now not common, the misleading label of ",Mikimoto quality", eBay auction still comes up from time to time. There is only one quality of Mikimoto pearl: those cultivated under a strict patented process in the bays of Ise, Honshu Japan. A tiny island off the Ise coast purchased by Mikimoto in the 1930`s has become a part of the rich international legacy of the name.

    Pearl grading:

Mikimoto uses a widely copied grading method independent of GIA grading standards. There are four grades, AAA being the highest quality. There are also four sub-grades with AAA1, etc. The 1 represents a slightly more blemished surface. The highest grades have a ",mirror like ", reflection the lower grades a ",good clear ", reflection. Most buyers in Japan, myself included, who are not jewelers, appraisers or very wealthy are unaware of, nor require the exact grade of the pearls they purchase from Mikimoto. Buyers in general purchase grading or replacement valuation certification for insurance purposes, not to resell, so caution is warranted when such certification is included.

    Hanadama Pearls

Hanadama pearls supposedly rate higher in quality than the standard GIA triple A Akoya pearls according to the Japan Pearl Science Laboratory (JPSL) in Tokyo. Pearl necklaces cannot be referred to as Hanadama unless accompanied by JPSL certification, and currently sell at a premium in price over similarly sized Mikimoto top grade pearl strands. A word of caution is advised here as this grading and certification is a relatively new grading standard, especially in reference to Mikimoto pearls. I am currently researching for a future reference guide.

    Distinguishing the real thing

How can a Mikimoto buyer distinguish true high-grade pearls from cheaper freshwater, imitation, or other akoya pearls? Under microscopic magnification, a unique pattern of lines, or roadmap as it referred to, becomes apparent. All authentic Mikimoto pearls have a distinguished roadmap pattern that experienced pearl jewelers will recognize. Unfortunately, even if the piece is marked, it only guarantees the settings not the pearls. Replacement clasps in necklaces, which can rather easily be re-knotted, occasionally crop up from unscrupulous dealers. However, like most of us who are not dealers, there is an easier way. That very slight rose tint, pink or undertone, will not be found in 95% of any other Akoya pearl. This is the most important point for novice or other first time buyers to watch for.

    Other cautions: fake clasps

There is a black market for Mikimoto clasps for several reasons. The original piece could be broken, damaged, imitation, stolen or from old small bracelets etc. You get a $10.00 Chinese pearl necklace, put a real or fake Mikimoto clasp on it and sell it for a $1,000 or more. Mikimoto pearls themselves are the best documentation. When you learn to appreciate the difference, they are instantly recognizable from most other pearls.

    Background

It used to be very rare to find pearls over 6mm until Kokichi Mikimoto refined and developed the art of pearl culture. Now, all have the opportunity to appreciate high quality pearls of all sizes and colors.

The pearl is the birthstone for the month of June. And in the West, as the expression June Bride indicates, June is considered to be the best month for a wedding. It is no coincidence that the pearl is known as the gem of brides, which, if worn of the wedding day, is believed to bring future happiness.

Mikimoto, one of the most experienced creators of jewelry, with a long tradition of distinction, gained its well-deserved reputation through paying fine attention to detail. Each item of jewelry is designed to meet the wearer’s complete satisfaction and for these reasons, highly appreciated throughout the world. Among the many fans have included: the Princess of Monaco Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe, the Imperial Families of Japan and the United Kingdom, and many other celebrities and dignitaries.

Myths and Legends of the Pearl

According to ancient Sanskrit books, oysters were said to open in the morning to imbibe the dewdrops, which were transformed through air and sunlight into pearls. If the air and light were not just right, the pearls would be faulty. In Roman times, it was discovered that pearls dissolved in wine have a most exquisite flavor. Cleopatra is reputed to have swallowed a pearl of fabulous value. In 1669, the famous chemist Dr. Schroder wrote (in Latin) that pearls ",are an excellent cordial, that strengthens the balsam of life, resists poison, pestilence and putrefaction, and clears the spirits, and they are so famous that men in the greatest agonies are refreshed thereby", In China, pearls are ground into powder as a cure for irritability, and as a charm against pestilence.

Discerning a pearl`s quality: Five distinctions.

    1) Luster

This is the most important feature of the pearl. As the number of pearl layers increases the deeper in tone the luster becomes. If you compare two or three pearls of varying luster, you can see the difference in quality.

    2) Color

Quality is also graded by clearness of color. Distinctive color is proof of high quality. Pearls have a wide variety of color although the difference in shade is very subtle. Colors are broadly categorized as pink, white, silver white, creamy white, gold, blue and black.

    3) Shape

Generally speaking, the more perfectly round the shape of the pearl the better it is. However, pearl oysters rarely produce pearls, which are perfectly round. Often they are flat or irregular in shape. Even those with a perfect shape are not necessarily of a high quality in color or luster. Mikimoto discards all low-grade pearls keeping only those of the highest quality. Less than five out of a hundred are considered worthy of the name of Mikimoto.

    4) Size

The larger the size of the pearl, the higher its value since it is difficult to cultivate a pearl of more than 9mm in diameter within the shell of a pearl oyster. Popular uniform necklace lengths with pearls of approximately the same size: Choker 14- 16 inches Princess: 17 -19 inches Matinee: 20 -24 inches Opera 30 -36 inches Rope: over 36 inches.

    5) Flaws

Pearls are not artificial products but are products of nature. Therefore a pearl will often have a minor flaw (or sometimes referred to as variole in pearl jewelry), on its surface like any other natural gemstone. Mikimoto pearls are carefully chosen after a strict examination of natural blemishes.

    6) Nacre

Oops that`s six, but its not really a distinction in addition to the previous five above since the only way to really tell if a particular pearl has a thick or flimsy nacre is to cut it in half or to tell how exquisite the red wine has become after the pearl has been dissolved in it.

    Caring for your pearl jewelry

Because pearls are organic, they are affected by conditions of their environment. Excessive heat or open flame can cause a pearl to brown, split, crack and burn. Even dry air will cause a pearl to dehydrate and the nacre to crack. Acids will corrode as well as harmful gasses. When worn on the body regularly, pearls are lubricated by natural body oils, which help them retain their reflective qualities. When stored too long, they turn dull as if responding to neglect. Remove any pearl jewelry you wear when you may expose to acidic chemicals. It is a good idea to have your Mikimoto jewelry checked at the nearest Mikimoto store at least once every two to five years.

    ",M", in the Shell Symbol

Most Mikimoto jewelry creations have an ",M", in the shell Mon or symbol which is stamped on the setting. This is a quality guarantee mark by which the jewelry is proven to be among the best in the world. Mikimoto is responsible for any jewelry design creation carrying this mark for the lifetime following its purchase.

Japanese and International Mikimoto brand names:

There are 5 common U.S. Mikimoto lines in total. They go in this order: Mikimoto (The highest quality line), Blue Lagoon, Gordon's Classic collection (this line is only available in 'Gordon's Jewelers'), Sea Magic (available at chain-jewelry stores in malls), Zales Signature Collection (available in Zales Jewelry stores). These are all exclusive lines distributed by Mikimoto. They should not be confused with Mikimoto brand pearls. These lines represent high quality pearls at a good value, although they do not meet the Mikimoto brand control standards, the pearls still have good luster and value. Markings of ",S", (purposely mislabeled as platinum), ",SIL",, ",14K",, ",585", and ",750", are Mikimoto export items.

In Japan there are five common Mikimoto lines: Mikimoto, (as in the U.S. the highest quality line), Mikimoto Pearl Island, (selected boutiques using Mikimoto pearls in outsourced settings), Perlita, (exclusive to selected boutiques and becoming harder to find), Mikimoto Gift Selection, (Mikimoto brand name packaging in non trademarked jewelry settings and value grade pearls), and Mikimoto International, (design accessories such as clocks, watches, photo frames, bookmarkers and other non jewelry related items). It is also important to note that independent jewelers in Japan use Mikimoto wholesale lot pearls in very fine quality non-trademarked pieces. Markings of ",18k",, ",950", (silver), and ",pt950",, ",pt850", is the standard used by the finest jewelry made in Japan.

A final word about Mikimoto ring sizes, resizing and values

Virtually all Mikimoto rings sold in Japan would be in the U.S. size 3 to 6 ranges, 18 caret gold or platinum, and most likely would have to be resized for sale outside Japan. This keeps these Mikimoto, Japan ring values lower, especially in the 3 to 4 sizes, which would be too petite to wear for most adults in the U.S and Europe.
