1964 Mercedes Benz 230SL
Superb California black plate car with desirable 4 speed manual and both tops (hard top &, soft top). This car has been sold.
When the 230SL came on the scene in 1963 it was much improved over it's predecessor, the 190SL. Front disc brakes and independent rear suspension were nice advancements, but the big news was the fuel injected 2.3 litre six. Now silky smooth and capable the 230SL sold well, and was soon nicknamed the ",Pagoda", SL because of it's tiered hard top shape. Today these wonderful Mercedes' have a huge following and are very popular with discerning collectors, both men and women.
The 230SL for sale here is a well cared for example that has spent it's entire life in Southern California. It comes with both the hard top and a new correct canvas soft top, and is equipped with the very desirable 4 speed manual transmission.
It still proudly wears it's California black and yellow licence plates, front and back, attesting to it's dry climate provenance.
It is finished in it's original white (re sprayed about 8 years ago), with the upholstery done in black vinyl (or MB tex) and proper charcoal carpets. All of the upholster y is in excellent condition. There is a slight rub in the driver's seat back rest bead, the only flaw, visible in this photo.
This Mercedes has had only 3 owners since new, and comes with an amazing amount of records dating back to 1964!
Also included are the owner's manual, supplement, service book, and parts book-all factory originals.
Another neat feature is the sideways rear ",seat", shown here complete with lap seat belt.
The interior chrome is very nice, as is the painted dash.
The original Becker Europa radio works well, and has that wonderful warm vintage tone.
A new canvas top has been fitted and is in excellent condition.
Proper ",herringbone", headliner, and brushed chrome top bows.
The rear window is crystal clear.
The original factory hard top is also included with the car. It is original and has not been detailed, but is in overall very good condition. A garage hard top hoist is included.
In California, tops are rarely needed, and arguably the best looking configuration is topless.
The engine compartment is nice and clean.
The original engine plate is intact as seen here.
The engine fires easily and runs well. It has good power, leaks little if any oil, and blows no smoke. The records indicate a rebuild was done in the late 1970's. This Benz runs and drives as it should- smooth and tight. All of the shifter bushings were just replaced.
The body is excellent with no signs of any major collisions. The paint is a nice quality re spray on par with the quality of the original paint. There are very few tiny nicks and scratches in the paint, and hard to find except on extremely close inspection.
The sides are nice and straight, and panel fit is excellent.
The only evidence of any body damage is the area above the grill between the headlights. The narrow top piece between the grill and the hood opening has a slightly uneven lineup with the top of the grill. It is very minor and can barely be seen in this photo.
however, the bottom is perfectly straight and all the front rails and frames are mint, showing how minor it actually was.
Living in California all it's life, this 230SL has escaped the tin worm. The floors and rockers are all original and have not been patched or repaired in any way. They also have not been dressed up to look better. What you see here is original undercoating and remnants of the original paint. This is the right front underneath.
Here is the right rear underneath.
Here is the left rear underneath.
With the mat removed, once again the integrity of the car speaks volumes.
5 of the original Mercedes wrenches are included, as well as the original jack and lug wrench.
Tires are relatively new radials with 80-90% tread left.
Most of the chrome is original and very nice. A few pieces have been re chromed to a very high standard. The windshield was replaced about 8 years ago and is crisp and pit free.
