The Institute will be well represented at this week’,s Jazz Education Network Conference in San Diego, CA. Four of our Performing Arts High School groups will be performing, as will the Thelonious Monk Institute Ensemble (college program ) and the Thelonious Monk/LAUSD All-City Big Band (Jazz in the Classroom ). Saxophonist and member of the Thelonious Monk Institute Class of 2016  Daniel Rotem is being featured on Berklee’,s homepage. Daniel and fellow Berklee alums performed to sold-out crowds at this year’,s Monterey Jazz Festival. The festival also featured numerous members of the Institute family, including Lionel Loueke, Melissa Aldana, Marcus Miller and Institute Chairman Herbie Hancock.

Many thanks to all who helped make the 2014 All-Star Gala a rousing success. The audience enjoyed stunning performances by an array of artists, including Institute Chairman Herbie Hancock, Pharrell Williams, Wayne Shorter, Kevin Spacey, Jimmy Heath, Queen Latifah, Dianne Reeves, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Melissa Aldana, Joshua Redman and many more. We were also pleased to honor President Bill Clinton  with the Maria Fisher Founder’,s Award for his many contributions to celebrating and perpetuating jazz over the years. Check out photos from the event here.

Congratulations to the three winners of the 2014 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Trumpet Competition. Marquis Hill (1st), Billy Buss (2nd) and Adam O’,Farrill (3rd)! Thanks also to all 13 competitors for inspiring us this weekend. The future of jazz trumpet is indeed in good hands!

We are pleased to announce the Semifinalists for the 2014 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Trumpet Competition. These 13 talented trumpet players will compete for over $100,000 in scholarships and prizes on November 8-9 in Los Angeles, CA. Click here  for more info.

We’,ll be returning to Mississippi this month!  We’,re so excited to partner with GRAMMY Award-winning vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater  in teaching the next generation about the blues and jazz and their vital roles in American art and culture.
