Ab Belt Review: Contour Abs, Slendertone &, Flex Belt compared!

Last update: 12/24/2014

Ab belts have seen a huge popularity surge in recent months, for example you have probably seen the Contour Abs commercial on television. But are they worth the money?

These electronic ab belts use the same technology that has been used on physical therapy patients for over 20 years. They typically come with a special type of gel pads that are placed over your abdominal muscles. The ab belt then sends a charge through the pads that goes into the muscles and causes them to flex and contract.

Do ab belts really work?

While earlier versions of ab toning belts were not always that effective, the newest versions of ab belts have been cleared by the FDA for toning, strengthening and firming the abdominal muscles. In fact, one brand of ab belt called the Flex Belt was the first EMS product to be cleared by the FDA as a Class II medical device.

Multiple clinical trials have also been performed on the ab belts. The largest study conducted at Wisconsin La-Crosse University was published in the Journal of Sports Medicine with the following results:

  • 100% of the participants reported that their abs felt more toned and firmed
  • 92.3% felt the firmness of their ab muscles increased

These are considered outstanding results and they coincide with the countless positive user reviews on consumer websites and forums.
