It has come to my attention that there have been an increase in dog food recalls in these past few years. One that surprised me was the recent Innova dog food recall. Innova is made by the company Natura, they’,ve had a great reputation until now. Natura provided evidence of salmonella contamination in their products. The June 18, 2013 recall includes the following brands Innova, EVO, California Natural, Healthwise, Karma and Mother Nature. Canned dog foods are excluded from this recall.

The Natura company took full responsibility for their mistake and pulled all products with an expiration date prior to June 10, 2014 from store shelves. If you purchased any of these products with an expiration prior to June 10, 2014 please discard them. So far there haven’,t been any reported cases of adverse reactions to the feeding. In the future I hope Natura steps up their game and provides quality dog foods to the world.

Salmonella affected dogs will display symptoms of lethargy and vomiting. Some dogs may carry salmonella and can infect their handlers or other pets. Please see a veterinarian if your dog have been consuming these foods.

Dog’,s aren’,t only ones who are affected by salmonella contamination, us dog owners who handle these foods are also susceptible to disease. When handling dog foods owners should remind themselves to wash their hands thoroughly. In humans, salmonella contamination can cause vomiting, fever, diarrhea and nausea. In rare occasions it can also cause muscle aches and eye problems.

I am scared to feed my puppies any commercial brands nowadays, I think I will stick to raw feeding mostly at least they till they get through their first year. Raw feeding is beneficial for many reasons here are just to list a few.
