I purchased my home five months ago and have been experiencing water not hot enough and of very short capacity. It is an A O Smith model ECT 40 200. My home is only five years old and the previous owner indicated that the original water heater failed and was replaced, under warranty and by the contractor/builder, after only one month. This morning the water heater lacked enough hot water for one shower and was making a strange, loud noise. I called A O Smith and they determined that it was "under warranty". I was instructed to remove the upper and lower covers and to disconnect the wires at both levels and to provide a resistance reading for each coil. I'm glad it's not my gall bladder that was acting up!

An AO Smith new water heater model GNR-40-200 was purchased at a plumbing supply store and installed by our licensed plumber on August 12, 2013. On October 18, 2013 the water heater failed. The household had twin babies age 1 year at the time. so it was difficult to be without hot water for an extended period of time. It was difficult to find a 'warranted' plumber as required by AO Smith. We went through the pressure tests etc. and plumber determined the GAS CONTROL VALVE was faulty. AO Smith sent a new part and on 10-22-13 the water heater worked again. This was 4 DAYS without hot water with two babies in the house.
Their customer care center is HORRIBLE. they deflect you, turn you away, are unclear about exactly what they need as proof that their product has failed, they refer you to other departments and basically give the consumer the run-around. This was a HORRIBLE experience and I will NEVER purchase another AO Smith product and I will spread the word to anyone who cares to listen. Their warranty is worthless. Of course we did not read the fine print about what is covered. which is basically NOTHING. Crummy company with robot employees who cover up faulty product. I would be ashamed to work for such an organization.
