Chlorhexidine Mouthwash

Chlorhexidine Mouthwash

Chlorhexidine mouthwash is perhaps one of the most effective mouthwashes available today. Chlorhexidine is an effective antiseptic chemical that works very well for gram negative and gram positive bacterial infections. Thus, chlorhexidine can be a powerful ingredient in the treatment of the diseases of the mouth resulting from bacterial infections. When used as a mouth wash, this chemical can help in the elimination of gingivitis, a gum disease, apart from being a potent chemical substance that can counter bacteria and plaque, two of the main reasons for bad breath in people. The pellicle coated enamel surface of the teeth is penetrated by chlorhexidine, and this makes the effects of chlorhexidine against bacteria immediate and long lasting.

Though chlorhexidine has many positive effects and its effectiveness against bacterial infections, plaque and gingivitis is well documented, as with all things that deliver immediate results, this chemical does have some side effects, too. It is imperative that a person seeking treatment for plaques, bar breath, gingivitis or any other gum or mouth related problems consult a dentist before trying out chlorhexidine on their own. Chlorhexidine can have contra indications in people that are allergic to all derivatives of the compound chlorhexidine gluconate.

There is also some controversy surrounding the usefulness of this chemical against all types of diseases of the mouth. For instance, chlorhexidine’,s action against caries has not been proven scientifically as having any serious benefits. Furthermore, continuous usage of chlorhexidine can also cause aesthetic problems, as this can erode the surface enamel of teeth and cause stains over a long time. However, a chlorhexidine mouthwash remains the preferred choice of a person who is suffering from bad breath and other bacteria induced mouth diseases because of its immediate action. A simpler solution for minor dental problems is using a hydrogen peroxide mouthwash which does not have too many major side effects associated with it.
