Underlayment is essential when installing laminate flooring. Depending on the type of the floor and subfloor type, you are required to install proper underlayment. Underlayment plays multiple, important roles. One key role is so the laminate is able to float, this will also help with minor subfloor imperfections and reduce noise. The type of subfloor will determine what thickness and brand of underlayment is required.
When installing laminate over a wood subfloor, a STANDARD. 2 or 3mm thick underlayment is required. For all cement subfloor installations, a VAPOR BARRIER is necessary- it prevents any potential humidity to break through the floor and ruin the laminate flooring.
You have the option to purchase underlayment with 2-3mm thickness. You can opt for a 3in1 underlayment which is a combination of standard underlayment, vapor barrier and attached tape to make your installation process easier. The most beneficial and practical underlayment offered is SILENT underlayment, which combines all above features plus gives you extra sound reduction.
If flooring with pre-attached underlayment was purchased, underlayment is not required and all needed is a simple moisture barrier polyethylene film, also called VISQUEEN. In this case do not install any other type of padding.
