The company's operations date back to 1946, when entrepreneur and inventor Ralph Liebert established Capital Refrigeration Industries. Capital specialized in refrigeration equipment for emerging technologies. Cooling mainframe computer rooms assumed more importance as the company grew.
Ralph Liebert built the first prototype for cooling electronics and previewed it for IBM. The computer company made arrangements for Liebert to unveil the new system at the World Computer Conference in 1965. The presentation led to a batch of orders and the creation of Liebert Corp.
In the following years Capital Refrigeration Industries and Liebert Corp. operated out of the same facilities. Liebert Corp. later formed a subsidiary, Conditioned Power Corporation, to target the problem of inconsistent power in data processing. Conditioned Power became a division of Liebert Corp. in 1981.
Larry Liebert, Ralph's son, took over as the company's president in 1980 and took the company public in 1981. Liebert Corp. acquired Programmed Power from Franklin Electric in 1983, adding the uninterruptible power supply business.
