Are Nootropics Safe?

People are usually very skeptical before trying nootropics. Nootropics have been around for a long time. They have been proven to be very safe and extremely low in toxicity. A responsible user should be able to enjoy the benefits with limited negative reactions.

The truth is, nootropics may actually help protect the brain. Studies have shown some nootropics to reduce free radicals and oxidative stress within the brain. With this said, you should not self-medicate yourself with these supplements and should always speak to your doctor before use

Minor side effects can occur when taking nootropics. It is always recommended to start with lower doses to minimize these risks. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding do not take these supplements and if you are on medication always consult a doctor before use.

What Are Racetams?

The Racetam family is an excellent choice if you want to improve overall cognitive function performance. Racetams have not been approved by the FDA in the United States &, Canada as a medication and are currently available over-the-counter. In some countries, racetams have been deemed to have a wide range of medical uses and are currently available by prescription.

There are many types of racetams. Piracetam is the oldest and most well-known of the group. Since the development of Piracetam, more racetams have been discovered. Some of the more popular racetams include: Aniracetam. Oxiracetam. Pramiracetam and Noopept but there are several other less known ones as well.

How Do They Work?

Racetams act on the Glutamate receptors in the brain. There are two types of Glutamate receptors, AMPA and NDMA. Glutamate, an important neurotransmitter, binds to these receptor sites and assists in learning and memory formation as well as muscle coordination and other important neurological functions.

Racetams also act on Cholingeric receptors which bind to Acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is another important neurotransmitter involved in cognitive function. The Acetylcholine binding process causes increased alertness and sensory perception.Damage to the Cholingeric receptors and the Acteylcholine system has been linked to memory problems as well as Dementia and Alzhiemer’,s.

Racetam Benefits
  • Improved Memory
  • Accelerated Learning
  • Increased Focus
  • Improve Reflexes
  • Enhanced Sensory Perception
  • Better Mood/Less Anxiety (Some)

These are just some of the basic and most common effects of racetams. Many people will have different experiences and results. It really depends on the individual. Sometimes one may get limited results with one racetam and optimal results with another. Stacking will also increase overall benefits. It really comes down to a trial and error process to find the best options for you. Other Nootropic Supplements

There is currently, two lab altered versions of B-Vitamins called Sulbutimaine and Pyritinol. Sulbutimaine and Pyritinol are excellent nootropics and available over the counter in the United States but some other countries require a prescription.

Disulfides

Sulbutiamine and Pyritinol work differently than the racetams. Sulbutimaine, a Vitamin B1 derivative, works to increase the bio-synthesis of Actelycholine. It has been labeled as a very powerful nootropic and mood booster. Pyritinol, a Vitamin B6 derivative, works on a different set of neurotransmitters.

Choline/Acetylcholine Precursors

Choline is essential for the body to stay healthy. Deficiency in choline can cause serious physical and mental problems. It is reported that 90% of the population is deficient in choline and most don’,t even known it. Common sources of choline in food are eggs and fatty meats.

Choline is very important for cognitive function because it is a precursor to Acteylcholine. Your body needs enough choline to convert into Acteylcholine to keep your brain healthy. For this reason, choline supplements are often considered great nootropics, even by themselves. CDP-Choline and Alpha GPC are the best sources for Choline.

Choline works best when stacked with nootropics. Stacking choline with a racetam(s) can also help prevent or reduce side effects. Often, people find that they get headaches when they take racetams by themselves and that stacking them with choline helps reduce this problem. We always recommend too stack your nootropics with a choline source, especially if you do not get enough from your diet.

Smart Drugs vs Nootropics

Many college and university students are choosing to use smart drugs to help them in school. People often confuse nootropics with smart drugs but this is false. Smart drugs usually refer to the class of prescription ADHD drugs that are often used illegally and at a high risk to the user.

Choosing to take smart drugs is not an effective or long term solution. Smart drugs may help you study faster or keep you awake longer, but they are not your best option. Most of the ADHD medications are based on an amphetamine structure and they are not healthy for your heart or your liver. Also, by taking smart drugs, you are putting yourself at considerable risk for addiction to these substances.

Nootropics on the other hand, are very safe, and if used properly, can be more effective than smart drugs. If you find a racetam like Piracetam, does not do the trick, try moving to a more potent racetam like Noopept or Phenylpiracetam. There are just safer and more available options.
